VCs are sitting on a record $300B of dry powder. That's a ton of capital sitting on the sidelines. Why are cash reserves so high? Because many VCs are in a vicious cycle: -- In order to make dry powder available to invest in startups, VCs have to call the capital from LPs -- But, many VCs haven't had any meaningful returns since 2021, as exit value plummeted over the past two years -- Now, many are stuck waiting until they provide some returns to call more capital from LPs -- But, the IPO window still hasn't opened (even though the market has ripped recently, especially tech stocks) -- And M&A has been quiet with hawkish regulatory regimes in the US, EU, and UK -- In the meantime, these VCs aren't making new investments How do LPs feel about this? Grady Buchanan, who runs a fund of funds called NVNG Investment Advisors, LLC, gave some insight into the LP mindset on a recent episode of This Week in Startups: -- We do not pay fund managers to sit on the sidelines -- If they are sitting and waiting, LPs have to know the whys and why-nots -- If you're sitting on ~50%+ reserves right now, figure out a different way to generate value for LPs -- LPs want to know how fund managers spend their time and effort, and how those efforts will generate returns for them! #venturecapital #LPs #tech #startups
