The Empathy Building workshop is our take on traditional unconscious bias training. We frame the topic in a positive light by focusing on building healthy behaviors & habits to be empathetic toward the varied experiences, upbringings & perspectives of others.
Research shows that the way we approach the topic of diversity makes all the difference. A mandatory training for unconscious bias automatically puts folks in a defensive mindset and they enter conversation with a negative mindset.
"We had a six-week session, the Empathy Building workshop.
Each one-hour workshop was a really nice mix of formal 'lecture' training and group breakout sessions. We also were provided with weekly homework and reflection points that were a really nice way to keep the momentum going each week. [It made] sure that the topics that were covered were thought about, and that people were carrying it with them into their everyday lives.
Overall the biggest impact really has been on building trust and empathy across the organization. I think that the workshop each week reminded us to:
