One of my favorite restaurants since med school (aka a long time ago greater than 15 years). The food is always excellent. My favorite meal is off the menu (chicken pot pie - it's the only version of this I'll eat). Nothing here is bad. Evening is good.
The landlords are making a terrible decision by not renewing their lease. I hope they can find a new spot soon!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jul 6, 2021
Great place with open space for outdoor seating with water view and plenty indoor seating as well. Variety of food and drinks. Staff is very attentive and we enjoyed Lauren the bartender, she is sweet and explained the menu and local beers.
We really loved the Nachos.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 15, 2022
When my husband and I came to visit the area, we read so many good things about it! While we did enjoy the food, it is a bit of rowdy bar/restaurant. Not somewhere to sit and enjoy a meal, too much.
We were sat outside and there were many patrons standing in front of our table taking photos or walking in and out to go and smoke. People just had no common sense for keeping quiet or personal space. The most annoying was that people would run up and down the steps from their boat to the restaurant and scream and shout. The wait staff just watched like it was any other day and this was the norm.
I would go back again and try one more time because I enjoyed the food, but if the patrons are as annoying as last time and the staff lets them get away with it, then it is not worth the trip.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 20, 2022
We had a party of 20 and they have great space for big parties and a private room. Service was good and quick. No issues with handling big parties. We got a few apps - chicken tenders, pretzels, curds, and nachos. I would highly recommend the curds - some le the best in the city and have a little garlicky taste to them. Everyone loved them! Well known for their beer selections. Most of the girls had wine and they had a pretty good selection. I got a turkey burger for dinner and it was really good!! No complaints on the food at all. Would recommend to come watch games in the bar or for big parties. They have a nice patio on the water that I'd love to come back for.

Service was good - attentive, and food came out within a reasonable amount of time. Sat outside, and the space is nice. My wedge salad was good - I ate every bite. The beer however, was god awful. We had two flights and EVERY beer was terrible. I rank a brewery by their beers and on beers alone, this place is one star. Service and food got me to two. If you are looking for a nice place to have a relaxed meal and you don't care about beer, this could be the place. If you like beer even a little, avoid.

I'm glad this place is opened on Labor Day although with shortened hours. I got an interesting ale infused with tea. I didn't really read the description but a nice surprise. Planning to test out the Octoberfest next because it's the time.
Relatively busy despite the holiday or maybe because of the holiday. The Ale House has a second floor and a patio so it seems like that is where most of the crowd is. Quite comfortable almost all alone at the bar.
A great place to bring the family's I saw several families enter in and out. Plus a lovely view of the river. Also, just a fun place to look around. Cool tap handles, wood work, and open ceilingHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 551180355Aug 31, 2020
I have been to MKE Ale House a bunch of times and always have a great experience. There was a short wait to get a table and we were able to sit outside by the river, which was perfect with the nice weather!
My one complaint is that we had to ask for a server after about 10-15 minutes of waiting. We waited for someone to check-in and let us know about the menu policy before I finally flagged someone down and asked if we should just google the menu. She did bring us a QR code, but then did not return to take our order. After more waiting we were able to flag down another server, who ended up doing a great job!
Once we were able to finally get our order in, it came in a very reasonable amount of time and the food was great. One side of fries was forgotten, but they were able to get it out to us within a couple minutes. Overall, we had a good experience and some great food!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 9, 2021
Went to the ale house with a friend for a late lunch. We were looking forward to some items on their full menu but that day the ale house had a limited menu with less than 5 options. Which was a bummer as we were looking forward to some cheese curds! We settled for a healthier option in the hummus platter and man, it was delicious. I would definitely recommend. The hummus platter and cold beer coupled with a great view of the river and beautiful weather made for a fun afternoon!

I really love that this place is on the river! It makes it much more fun to sit outside on the riverwalk. The indoor is also nice and spacious. I am very sad this place has closed as it was such a casual place with great food and drinks.

What happened here? The Ale House used to be so good...good experience, delicious food...this visit was so disappointing. Even more disappointing was that we had out-of-town guests with us, so it was a wasted opportunity to show them all Milwaukee has to offer. Maybe we were just unlucky, but I don't plan to go back any time soon.
The service was fine (minus needing to hunt down silverware), and the atmosphere pleasant as usual. They offer a great list of Milwaukee Brewing beers, and I tried the Lemon Meringue Milkshake IPA. It was underwhelming, definitely more hoppy, but not bad.
We had the cheese curds for an appetizer - easily the best food of the meal, these were delicious. But the mains...what happened to the BBQ Pork Sandwich??? This used to be my FAVORITE pulled pork sandwich I've ever tried; I always order this every time we visit the Ale House. The Louie's Demise BBQ sauce, the SLAW was phenomenal...replaced by some bland and sad jalapeno-zucchini pickles (what?? Like soggy zucchini with a hint of flavor) and now that I'm reading the menu, no pepperjack which should have been on there. So, so disappointing. My significant other had wings which I had a couple of...the best thing about them was the Buffalo Sauce. The wings themselves were dry and mostly flavorless...and small. The fries that came with the BBQ pork sandwich were underwhelming and kind of cold. The cheese curds were really the only good thing.
Our guests seemed to enjoy the atmosphere and dining on the patio but were underwhelmed by the food. The food took so long to come out...and the restaurant wasn't very busy. The Ale House used to be a go-to for a good dinner in the Third Ward/Riverwalk area, but no more.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 26, 2018Previous reviewExcellent beer, food, and riverside dining make the Ale House a reliably great choice. Their menu items are often made with Milwaukee Brewing Company beer. The pulled pork sandwich is my personal favorite; maybe the best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had. The service is good, and the space is open and pleasant with a great patio overlooking the river. Trivia on Wednesdays is a fun option. You really can't go wrong with the Ale House, especially when there are numerous fantastic Milwaukee beers you'll only find on tap there.
